What Are L.L. Bean Boots? (And Why You’ll Love Them)

what are bean boots

Welcome back to “Things You Didn’t Know You Needed” with my (recurring) guest, Whitney Ginsburg! If you read my first post in this series on faux fur outerwear, you know that Whitney is the beneficiary (or victim, depending on your perspective) of my love of shopping. While that item may have been somewhat frivolous, L.L. Bean Boots have come in handy this winter! These winter boots bring together the best of weather-proofing with a necessary cuteness factor.

What Are Bean Boots?

Bean boots aka duck boots are L.L. Bean’s signature waterproof boot. I had never heard of them until I relocated to the East Coast in college, where they were all the rage. It’s no wonder considering L.L. Bean is a Maine-based company.

Per Wikipedia, “They are constructed from a rubber sole and a leather upper. The boots were created in 1911 and were an instant success. The boots became an item of clothing connected to elite prep schools.” In my mind, elite prep schools are synonymous with the East Coast. So, it’s no wonder L.L. Bean Boots have not taken the West Coast by storm yet. But I’m bringing the trend here, starting with Whitney, who also modeled hers for these photos.

Why Are Bean Boots Awesome?

First of all, bean boots come in a variety of different styles from the classic style like the ones photographed to super fuzzy, tall bean boots. Meaning whether your a man, woman or child, you can find a pair that fits you! Speaking of fit, check out L.L. Bean’s recommended sizing chart. You may want to size up based on your sock preferences.

Secondarily, these miraculous snow boots are not as big and bulky as traditional snow boots. I own Sorels, which are incredibly waterproof, but boy are they bulky. L.L. Bean Boots can be worn all day without changing shoes at the office if you don’t want to.

You can shop some of my favorite LL Bean styles here:

How Much do Bean Boots Cost?

Bean boots are an investment. They are expensive, but they last for years. You’re looking at spending at least $100 for a new pair and up to around $225 for a fur-lined pair. You can save yourself a few bucks by waiting to purchase until they do a 25% off sale. Be sure to sign up for their emails so you get notified of the coupon codes! The other alternative is Poshmark, which is how Whitney got her nearly-new bean boots at a steep discount. Here’s a link to a pre-filtered search for women’s L.L. Bean Boots. Poshmark allows you to make offers on clothes and shoes that other fashionistas are selling. If you’re patient, you can get a killer deal. It’s currently my favorite way to shop, particularly for those items I want, but don’t need enough to buy at full price.

Until Whitney’s next purchase (ha!), here goes nothing.

  1. Great outfit ideas and tips on why I need these boots! I do live in Idaho and we are getting plenty of snow and wet weather this winter. It is worth it to invest in a good, quality pair of boots we can wear more than one season. Thanks!
