For the record, I am a loyal worshipper to the coffee gods. It kick starts my day and keeps the trains running during my inevitable afternoon lull. I have a gold card at Starbucks and you’ve all seen me post photos on Instagram from Tatte Bakery. However, I recently strayed from my beverage of choice into tea for a very classy afternoon at the Boston Public Library (BPL).
The Boston Public Library
The library sits in the middle of Boston directly next to the Copley T stop on the green line. It’s a stunning building worth visiting if you’re in town (and studying in if you live here). It’s similar to a museum inside complete with Sargent paintings just like the Museum of Fine Arts. The BPL is also historic. In 1848, it became the first large free municipal library in the United States.
The building is so much more than a library. The courtyard is a free outdoor space where you can enjoy your lunch or read a book. It’s gorgeous enough to host weddings or for couples to take engagement photos. On this visit, our destination was inside the library for afternoon tea in a small space just off the courtyard called The Courtyard Restaurant, which is a little on the nose. I was joined on this adventure two of my old co-workers, Elyse and Nikki, who are both avid tea drinkers and suggested this outing. We made reservations for 1:15 pm, and I used it as a late lunch.
Afternoon Tea at the Boston Public Library
It’s a flat $39 for adults and $19 for children to enjoy tea and a selection of amazing sandwiches and pastries. They do not skimp on the snacks. The three-tiered tray of scones, cakes and savory bites was more than enough food for all of us.
When it came to ordering tea, I went with the Blood Orange Hibiscus, a herbal tea that was delightfully fruity. One of the unique details I love about this experience was the menu. Each person is given a book that contains the food and tea menus. Mine was “The Assault on Reason” by Al Gore. I love that they played on the charm of this unique destination.
If you’re in the mood for afternoon tea, but can’t get a reservation at the library, the Taj hotel also offers tea time. I have indulged in that as well at a friend’s baby shower. While the Boston Public Library space is white with a lot of natural light (a modern feel), the Taj experience feels more like you might be in a fine French house at tea time with colorful china and decor to match. The Taj also offers different tiers for your experience ranging from $38 to $58 with the most expensive featuring champagne or sparkling wine in addition to tea and snacks.
In my opinion, you can’t go wrong with either experience. Just be sure to make a reservation and savor each bite. Tea time is the perfect way to enjoy an afternoon with good friends.
Until next time, here goes nothing.
