Are Selkie Dresses Worth It? An Honest Selkie Review

selkie dress review

So, you saw a Selkie dress in your Instagram feed or your TikTok FYP. You’ve seen the prices and you’re wondering: Is a Selkie dress worth it? I’m here to give you an honest Selkie review.

My Quick Selkie Review

I own 4 Selkie dresses—so, that tells you at least that they are high-quality and fun enough to invest in. On the traditional puff styles, the biggest issue is the see-through bust. I solve that with a Skims bandeau. You don’t have the same transparency issues with the Selkie Ritz gowns and can wear them without a bra.

I think it’s also important to discuss the material that most Selkie dresses are made of. The dresses below are made from a stiffer but still flowy fabric—100% Polyester Organza. It gives it the puff and structure it needs. It doesn’t really breathe, so it can be tough in a sweaty setting (like when I wore it over the summer in Bath, U.K.). That said, I have found it challenging to clean these dresses, so be warned you’ll be hand washing or dry cleaning.

I also know that the price point can be tough to swallow at $200+ a dress. That said, I’ve never purchased directly from Selkie. I always buy second-hand through Mercari, Poshmark or Selkie resale Facebook groups.

Is Selkie a Luxury Brand?

Yes, I would say by most standards that Selkie is a luxury brand. You won’t find the dresses on racks at Walmart. They are unique, high-quality and ethereal, bringing princess dreams to life.

What Size Am I in Selkie?

Well, let’s start with the Selkie size chart. They are a super size-inclusive brand (we love to see it!) and offer products in sizes XXS to 6X.

To the left, you’ll see the size chart as of Feb. 2023. As a 44DD bust, I wear a 2X comfortable in this newest size chart. One thing to note: If you are shopping secondhand, be sure to ask WHEN they bought the dress from Selkie. If it was before the Spring of 2022, it may be the older size chart and you’ll want to order a size up. (Ex: I wear a 3X in the old size chart).

The good news on Selkie sizing is: you don’t need to worry about the hips on most dresses. They have so much room for twirling that if the bust measurements work, it should fit the rest of your body easily.
