3 Reasons You Should be Shopping (And Selling) on Poshmark

I like to shop. Are you surprised? I like to try new styles. New fits. New brands. And I love a deal. Until I recently, I shopped sales from my favorite retailers–buying brand new clothes. But shopping for clothes on Poshmark has swiftly taken the lead as my primary shopping hub and my favorite way to sell gently used clothes from my closet.

What is Poshmark?

Poshmark is an online platform for buying and selling clothing. More than that, it’s the ability to shop a friend’s closet. It’s the ability to make some money cleaning out your closet and purchase new-to-you items to give them a second life.

It has a desktop experience and a mobile app. I can post new clothes to my closet for people like you to shop in a matter of minutes. Because of how easy it is to post items for sale, there’s always new inventory to shop; it’s a great place to find the items that sold out elsewhere or get a deal on something that was outside your budget range when it was first released.

For example, last summer, I regretted not buying this yellow maxi dress from Torrid and then BAM! I found it on Poshmark. I also picked up this amazing embroidered denim jacket from Torrid. Ready to shop? You can shop my closet.

How Does Poshmark Work?

The beauty of Poshmark is its simplicity for buying and selling clothes online. Anyone can use it.

As a seller, you control the price of your clothes and the negotiations with buyers. You can offer deals and discounts for bundles. Yes, Poshmark takes a percentage of your sales, but you can still make decent money for your clothes if they are in good condition. Poshmark also handles the shipping labels, so when your items sell, they send you the label. You print it and ship your item. Easy breezy.

As a buyer, I love the options, the constant new inventory and the ability to give clothes new life. So much clothing gets thrown out, wasted. This is a chance to make better, more sustainable shopping choices. Plus, it’s great for your wallet to be able to negotiate and get a deal. I negotiated a great deal on this Eloquii dress. 👇

Why Should I Buy Clothes on Poshmark?

1. You can save money when you shop on Poshmark.

Negotiate, negotiate, negotiate. It’s rare something is being sold for anywhere close to full price–even brand new stuff.

2. You eliminate waste by shopping gently used clothing and even new clothing with tags that people never wore.

It’s clear that not everyone on Poshmark is in it for sustainability. It’s easy enough to buy up final sale items from a store and then resell it on Poshmark. BUT there is still a lot of opportunity to avoid that type of shopping and purchase gently used items from real people. Ultimately, we can all do our part to create less waste by shopping secondhand on sites like Poshmark and ThredUp.

3. You can shop with credit from clothes you’ve sold from your own closet.

I suppose this is a pro and con. When you sell clothes on Poshmark, the money goes into your balance. You can either transfer it to your bank account and have the money or you can use it to shop in the app. Like I said, I love to shop, so this is a great way to try to trends or buy pieces for a shoot without going straight to money in my bank account. It basically feels like I’m trading a dress in my closet for a new pair of shoes or a skirt. It’s a great system if you like to refresh your closet!

Is It Safe to Shop on Poshmark?

To date, I’ve only had one issue with a Poshmark order. I bought a dress and what I received in the mail was not at all what was in the photo. Poshmark’s customer service was fantastic. It was easy to report the package, get a free return shipping label and get a refund. The key lesson: Always ask for photos of the ACTUAL clothing item, not just photos of the item from the clothing website on a model.
